Energy Makeover
Stopping energy loss and waste is the first and most important step in making your home more comfortable and efficient.
Home Energy Checkup helps clients maximize their energy savings and
environmental comfort with our Energy Makeovers. After a makeover, many
homeowners find their energy bills slashed in half. And when adjusted for
stable energy costs, a makeover typically pays back its investment in only
2 to 7 years. (Actual payback depends on upgrades required and client goals).
After we determine your home's energy needs through My Energy Plan, we work
with you to implement the improvements that return the best energy savings for
your investment. This may include fixes such as sealing air leaks, adding
insulation, or replacing your heating and cooling equipment. And because your
satisfaction matters, we rerun our analysis when the work is complete to ensure
each improvement meets our exacting standards—and yours.Limited only by your goals, Energy Makeovers offer numerous possibilities for improving your home's energy efficiency and may include the following:
Building air sealing
If your home feels drafty in the winter and your heating bills are high,
you probably have numerous small air leaks, the equivalent of keeping a window
or door open! Typical sources of leaks include attic access points, recessed
lighting fixtures, other ceiling penetrations, windows and doors, and basement
band boards. The professionals at Home Energy Checkup find and seal all critical
air leaks in your home, giving you immediate payback on your investment. After
all our work is complete, we retest using our high-tech equipment to ensure
leaks are sealed and that your home remains permeable (to maintain indoor
air quality).Crawlspace conditioning
If your crawlspace has foundation vents that open to the outside, then you have
both an energy and indoor air quality problem. An unconditioned crawlspace
allows humidity to enter your home in the summer and heat to escape in the
winter. At Home Energy Checkup, we install a heavy-duty vapor barrier on the
floor and permanently seal it to your foundation, add a sump drain if required,
insulate your foundation walls to R-13 or above, insulate and seal your rim and
band joists, meter conditioned air into the new space, and verify our work with
our high-tech test equipment.Ductwork sealing
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that up to 40 percent of heated or
cooled air is lost through leaky ductwork. Why then do so many homeowners pay
for expensive heating and cooling equipment yet fail to have their ductwork
tested? It's like having a supercharged engine in a car with a broken
transmission. To maximize your HVAC efficiency, Home Energy Checkup tests your
ductwork with a duct blaster (the only EPA ENERGY STAR©-approved test method),
seals leaks with HVAC mastics, then retests to verify our work.Ductwork balancing and renovation services
When a room remains uncomfortable despite leak-free ductwork, the size of the
ductwork may be the culprit. Home Energy Checkup tests for this by measuring
the supply and return system airflow to the problem area. We then perform an
HVAC load test using computer simulation software. A combination of the test
results and computer software output will tell us if we need to resize the
room's ductwork. If ductwork resizing is necessary, we renovate the ductwork
and restest the air flow rates to verify our work so it meets our standards—and
yours.Electrical phantom load reductions
Surprisingly, even with all electrical devices off, your home may still consume
energy. Many homes we test exhibit electrical phantom loads that account for
hundreds of lost energy dollars per year. At Home Energy Checkup, we use
high-tech test equipment to determine your electrical plug loads, then identify
the cost-effective methods needed to reduce the loads, and implement
improvements that save you money.

Heating and cooling system replacement
Replacing HVAC equipment can be an expensive proposition. For this reason,
Home Energy Checkup thoroughly tests your existing equipment's performance and
makes suggestions to reduce your home's air leaks and improve its insulation
before we discuss replacement options. This pre-testing ensures that replacement
HVAC systems we install are properly sized for the reduced heating and cooling
load of your home. This testing results in lower equipment and maintenance costs,
and best of all, lower monthly energy bills.

Insulation services
Q: What percentage of tri-state homes have missing or improperly installed insulation?A: Over 99 percent.
With the temperature extremes we experience in winter and summer, insulation problems account for huge amounts of energy loss, as if your home were wearing a jacket filled with holes. Not a good deal for your pocketbook or comfort. Home Energy Checkup inspects your home's thermal envelope for problems then installs high quality fiberglass, cellulose, or foam insulation. To ensure all work has been done correctly, we use a thermal imaging camera to verify our work to our satisfaction and yours.

Window replacement
Replacing doors and windows costs thousands of dollars. Before we recommend
replacements, we test to rule out other sources of air leakage. Should
replacements doors and windows be justified, we install ENERGY STAR models that
save heating and cooling dollars, increase comfort, protect your furnishings
and flooring from UV damage, and boost your home's curb appeal. Factory-trained
technicians install our windows and doors and foam insulate around the frames
to eliminate leaks. We then retest with our blower door and thermal imaging or
smoke testing equipment to ensure the work is done our satisfaction and yours.
Your best counter to higher energy bills is to eliminate energy loss and waste; an investment in an Energy Makeover pays off year after year.
